This question comes up very often in conversation. There are no concrete numbers anywhere as to just how many transgendered there really are. This is complicated by a number of factors. Some of these factors are:
1. The very definition of "transgender" can vary greatly from one individual to another. I personally know a number of crossdressers who do not consider themselves to be "transgender".
2. Statistics vary considerably from one source to another. The biggest problem with statistics is that they rely on the willingness of a respondent to actually admit to the fact that they crossdress, etc. Anyone who is a crossdresser or tranassexual knows that many of us, especially in the beginning stages, will not admit to it even if it is an anonymous survey.
3. The very location and parameters of a survey can skew the results in either direction.
Most data on this subject is based on estimates as a result of these and other factors. We can only really guess as to "just how many of us are there?" If you would like to get an idea as to just how many transgendered there are, I have added a calculator to my web site that will allow you to pick your own percentage estimate and see for yourself. I have downloaded data from the US Census Bureau and am using this for my calculations. Choose your state or zip code and see for yourself how many of us may be living near you.
